ABOUT

La Maison du Rire was created by me, Emma Kershaw to share my passion for the wines and the foods of the Languedoc-Roussillon. For years I have been teaching about wines and spirits to WSET Diploma level. I have worked with winemakers, wine professionals, chefs and restaurateurs teaching to all levels of wine knowledge, about wines from across the globe. Partnering wines and food is my speciality and I delight in sharing my extensive knowledge and enthusiasm with keen wine amateurs.

In 2008 I moved permanently to the Corbières where, with my husband Chris, we have lovingly renovated an old winery to create ‘La Maison du Rire’ (the house of laughter), a wine school with a difference. Here you will learn not only about the wines of this incredibly diverse region, but about the foods as well and how to prepare them. A region rich in history and gastronomy, food that comes from local products and producers, demonstrating the terroir and its people. At La Maison du Rire you can choose from a wine and food tasting on the wines of the Languedoc-Roussillon, a day of cookery and wine, or a bespoke wine event. If you would like a private tasting in your home with your friends I can come to you.

Wine and food are natural partners, and after many years of teaching I am convinced that the best way to teach and to learn is with a glass in one hand and a plate in another!

Life is too short to drink bad wine and not be laughing!

A PROPOS

Domaine Olivier Pithon

It was a very windy, cloudy April morning that I found myself taking the wiggly, windy route to the village of Calce in the Fenouillèdes. I have long appreciated the fine wines of Olivier Pithon, in fact I still have the odd bottle of one of his first vintages, 2002, in my cellar. So I was looking forward to [...]

Chateau Canet

I first went to visit Château Canet in January this year to discuss wine events with owner Victoria Lemstra-Bake, I then returned the following month to taste the wines and meet with her husband and winemaker, Floris Lemstra. Château Canet is a wine estate in the Minervois village of Rustiques, just north of Trebes. Of the 120 hectares of [...]

Ragoût de Navets de Pardailhan

Recipe: I created this dish this month to match with 2 wines I was showing at events, but also to highlight these delicious local turnips. The navets de Pardailhan are from the plateau at Pardailhan around St Chinian, and have their own AOP. Their season is short Nov - Feb, their appearance long and black skinned with a white [...]

Chichoumée and Fougasse

Recipe: These are two classic southern French dishes that you may or may not have heard of! The first is a Biterrois dish, meaning that it originates from the Languedocian town of Béziers. It is very similar to the Provençal Ratatouille but with some key differences: they way that the vegetables are cut and the the omission of courgettes! The [...]

Mushroom Miso Soup

Recipe: Yesterday I had a working lunch with Honor from maisondelaroche we did a brisk 8 km walk whilst bouncing ideas around and then had a healthy lunch. I made Vietnamese spring rolls packed with crunchy seasonal veg and oodles of fresh herbs with a tangy herby dip, see TDLWE page 116. Then I made a mushroom miso soup which [...]
